Che Guevara - Guerrilla Warfare [pdf]

Unavailable on the MIA (www.marxists.org) due to copyright issues! An interesting read and a text of historical significance. But as pointed out by all comrades now, Guerilla warfare is of little relevance to the class struggle. Of technical usefulnness in the case of being underground in the countryside only.

Nontheless a text that is by its necessity, to be read. In the words of a former underground comander (Philippines), "On the tactic of guerillerism, Che got it wrong". Nontheless in the almost exceptional context of the Cuban Revolution this book is a 'must read'!

The Motorcycle Diaries [Avi]

An adaptation of a journal written by Ernesto "Che" Guevara (Bernal) when he was 23 years old. He and his friend, Alberto Granado (de la Serna) are typical college students who, seeking fun and adventure before graduation, decide to travel across Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Peru in order to do their medical residency at a leper colony. Beginning as a buddy/road movie in which Ernesto and Alberto are looking for chicks, fun and adventure before they must grow up and have a more serious life. As is said in the film itself, it's about "two lives running parallel for a while." The two best friends start off with the same goals and aspirations, but by the time the film is over, it's clear what each man's destiny has become.

Social Construct - By Any Means Necessary [mp3] [Stream]

This four-song EP is quite a promising little debut, with contemporary harsh EBM sounds tempered by hints of old-school flavor. Opening track "Enemy Inside" starts off with an onslaught of pounding industrial beats and thickly distorted vocals, but unlike many artists in the genre, Social Construct sees fit to keep things sounding a bit crunchy instead of giving into the temptation of overly clean production values.

It's a fitting aesthetic approach that works well with the band's anarchist message. As far as lyrics go, Social Construct is all about unabashed left-wing extremism one track is even entitled "Smash Capitalism" delivered so directly it makes Skinny Puppy's cut-up surrealism look like one of Bush's State of the Union addresses.

Social Construct's message can be summed up with the Denis Diderot quote employed in "No Gods No Masters": "Let us strangle the last king with the guts of the last priest." It's a throwback to the era of more politically inspired, punk-influenced industrial and a refreshing antidote to the meaningless abstractions of so many of today's EBM acts. Don't be mistaken, though; these tracks don't feel like a lecture. They might make you think, but they'll definitely make you dance.

Malcolm X (1972) [Avi]

Malcolm X, a 1972 documentary, which won the Academy Award for that year is like the man himself great, extraordinary, tragic, and in the end triumphant. This documentary is excellent reference material for anyone who has read his autobiography or has seen Spike Lee's 1992 film of the same name. I often compare this documentary to another gem Martin Luther King: From Montgomery To Memphis (1970).The producers of Malcolm X allows the man through a montage of footage of his speeches, voice overs, and occasional narration by James Earl Jones and an appearance by Louis Farrakhan formerly known as Louis X to speak for himself.

Declassified - Castro [Avi]

Despite the best efforts of the U.S. government, legal and illegal, Fidel Castro still leads the CPC. The target of a protracted and often bizarre series of assassination attempts, he survived them all. Using unique footage from the former East Germany, Declassified examines his skill at avoiding death. This hour also traces the popular theory that the CIA's failed attempts to remove Castro were what ultimately drove Lee Harvey Oswald to assassinate John F. Kennedy!

Rage Against the Machine-Battle of Los Angeles [mp3]

In attacking such issues as runaway capitalism and the gross unfairness of Mumia Abu-Jamal's trial, singer Zack de la Rocha has written his best rhymes yet. His striking revolutionary poetry--the hypnotic, accusing inventories of "Calm Like A Bomb" and the searing narrative of an illegal in "Maria," for example--are challenges to take action. For the 45-minute duration of this record, you really believe that a rock band can help change the world. Better yet, the echo it leaves behind places the responsibility on the listener.

Rage Against The Machine - Evil Empire [mp3]

Rage Against the Machine spent four years making its second album, Evil Empire. As the title suggests, their rage and contempt for the "fascist" capitalist system in America hadn't declined in the nearly half-decade they were away. Their musical approach didn't change, either. Lead vocalist Zack de la Rocha is caught halfway between the militant raps of Chuck D and the fanatical ravings of a street preacher, shouting out his libertarian slogans over the sonically dense assault of the band. Guitarist Tom Morello demonstrates an impressive palette of sound, creating new textures in heavy metal, which is quite difficult, and de la Rocha's dedication to decidedly left-wing politics is admirable, simply because few other performers of the '90s had made any sort of political stance.

Rage Against The Machine - Live At The Grand Olympic Auditorium [Avi]

Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium documents the last two shows from Rage Against the Machine, recorded in September 2000 for a planned November release, but canceled when the band broke up, and postponed for the second time one year later after three-fourths of the band formed Audioslave with Chris Cornell. Featuring highlights from the two shows, recorded September 12th and 13th, this delayed version of Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium also downplays the cover material that comprised the band's last studio album, Renegades, which is a good thing for the fans who agree that Rage performed better with originals than covers. Early on, the band storms through three of its career highlights -- "Killing in the Name," "Bulls on Parade," and "Bullet in the Head" -- with intense performances that capture its combination of heavy metal strut and punk rock disdain.

Einstein’s 100th "Anniversary" - Two Lectures [mp3] [Stream]

"Einstein's Miraculous Year" and “Relativity in a Nutshell” are presented by Professor Richard Wolfson, a 20-year teaching veteran at Middlebury College, These lectures reflect his expertise in interpreting science for the non-specialist. In “Einstein's Miracle Year,” you will learn about 1905, when the great physicist published major works in diverse areas of physics. Two of them—on the quantum nature of light and on special relativity—laid the groundwork for much of 20th-century physics. Others presented final convincing evidence for the reality of atoms and molecules. Einstein's name is most closely associated with the Theory of Relativity. In “Relativity in a Nutshell,” Dr. Wolfson outlines the essence of relativity and hints at why the theory requires a radical restructuring of our notions of time and space.

Einstein's Revolution [mp3]

Relativity" is a concept rooted in the tension between appearance and reality, and it reaches far back in history. Heraclitus argued that only change is real; Parmenides argued that change is impossible, and his follower Zeno invented paradoxes illustrating many of the problems in concepts like space, time, and infinity. Protagoras even argued that there is no single, correct view of reality, but that reality for any person is precisely as in seems to that person. In his words, "Man is the measure of all things". Plato used mathematical reasoning to discern reality from mere appearance, and modern natural science emerged from centuries of effort to acquire objective knowledge. The greatest scientists of the Renaissance and Enlightenment - including Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton - believed that some "real" or "absolute" space and time are independent of the senses. But Immanuel Kant, J.C. Maxwell, Ernest March, and Henri Poincare chipped away at this idea in the 18 and 19th centuries. In 1905, Albert Einstein published his Special Theory of Relativity, followed by the General Theory of Relativity in 1916. He firmly established (1) the idea that all judgement about motion is a matter of perspective; (2) that energy and mass are interrelated (E=mc2); and (3) that nothing can move faster than the speed of light (which does not vary). Einstein's theory of the space - time continuum was dramatically confirmed in a 1919 experiment during a solar eclipse.

Plan Colombia - Cashing In on the Drug War Failure [Avi]

With most of the US military aid under the so-called "Plan Colombia" delivered, President Pastrana unilaterally withdraws from the peace process engaged with the FARC guerilla (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and steps up violence in this 50 year-quasi-civil war. But what is left of the initial anti-narcotics purposeof the US "Plan Colombia"? After 20 years of drug-wars in the Andes resultingin a two fold increase of cocaine import in the US in the last ten years alone, what is to be expected from a plan focusing primarily on spraying coca-fields (by US Defense-contractor Dyncorps) in rebel-held parts of the country whencoca is grown all over Colombia? Interviews with Noam Chomsky, Ramsey Clark,Colombian Presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt (now a hostage of the FARC),US MCs Paul Wellstone and John Conyers, US Government officials, a WWF scientist, and many different Colombians from all walks of life, including guerilla-leaders, shed light on the complex issues of drug-trafficking and thecivil struggle in Colombia.

NoamChomsky - Hegemony or Survival [mp3]

Since Sept. 11, 2001, Americans have been heard to exclaim -- with varying degrees of shame, bewilderment and indignation -- ''Why do they hate us?'' The response tends to fall between two extremes. Bush administration officials say, in essence, they hate us for who we are. As President Bush has put it, ''They hate progress, and freedom, and choice, and culture, and music, and laughter, and women, and Christians, and Jews and all Muslims who reject their distorted doctrines.'' At the opposite end stands the M.I.T. professor Noam Chomsky. ''Why do they hate us?'' Chomsky asks in ''Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance.'' ''Because of you and your associates, Mr. Bush, and what you have done.''

Noam Chomsky - The New War on Terrorism, Fact and Fiction [mp3]

"We certainly want to reduce thelevel of terror... There is one easy way to do that... stop participatingin it." —Noam Chomsky, from the CD What is terrorism? And how can we reduce the likelihood of such crimes, whether they are against us or against someone else? With his vintage flair, penetrating analysis, and ironic wit, Chomsky, in perhaps his most anticipated lecture ever—delivered a month after 9/11, and hisfirst public statement—makes sense of a world apparently gone mad."The last time that the national territory of the United States was underattack, or for that matter, even threatened, was when the British burned down Washington in 1814. It was common to bring up Pearl Harborbut that's not a good analogy. The Japanese bombed military bases intwo US colonies, not the national territory; colonies which had been taken from their inhabitants in not a very pretty way...During these close to 200 years, we, the United States expelled or mostly exterminated the indigenous population, that's many millions of people, conquered half of Mexico, carried out depredations all over the region, Caribbean and Central America, sometimes beyond, conquered Hawaii and the Philippines, killing several hundred thousand Filipinos in the process. Since the Second World War, it has extended its reach aroundthe world in ways I don't need to describe. But it was always killing someone else. It was others who were getting slaughtered. Nothere."—Noam Chomsky, from the CD"Among the general public, I think there is much more openness and willingness to think about things thatwere under the rug and so on. These are opportunities and they should be used, at least by people who accept the goal of trying to reduce the level of violence and terror, including potential threats that are extremely severe and could make even September 11th pale into insignificance.

Chomsky, Noam - Media Control The Spectacular Achievements Of Propaganda [mp3]

"Propaganda," says Noam Chomsky, "is to ademocracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state"--in otherwords, the means by which leaders keep the masses in line. In this slimpamphlet, he looks at American propaganda efforts, from thewarmongering of Woodrow Wilson to the creation of popular support forthe 1991 military intervention in Kuwait, and reveals how falsificationof history, suppression of information, and the promotion of vapid, empty concepts have become standard operating procedure for the leadersof the United States--both Democrats and Republicans--in their effortsto prevent citizens from raising awkward questions about U.S. policy.

Noam Chomsky - Propaganda and Control of the Public Mind [mp3]

This is definitely one of the clearest and most valuable of Chomsky's lectures available on disc. Much of the material may be familiar to folks from countless lectures and interviews, as well as chapters in longer anthologies. But the recorded lecture here, in very good quality, is concise and fanscinating, a good one-stop for an intro and then some on the history and importance of propaganda in American history.Chomsky talks about the rise of propaganda as a tool of social control, right from the early days of the Ministry of Information in Britain to its American counterparts, the advancement of propaganda inthe business world, and the necessity of the elite classes to mold the public's mind and reduce the serious threat of democracy. All of it is very clear, with many references, and with an often sarcastic nod toward the intentions of the planners and the real effects, right to the present day.

Noam Chomsky - Class War [mp3]

Corporations and their political allies wage an unrelenting class war against working people. "Class War" is vintage Chomsky. His astute analyses provides excellent tools for self-defense. Universe - The Cosmology Quest [Trail] [Streaming]

Universe – The Cosmology Quest is a unique mixture of a human interest and science documentary film. It exhibits a sharp understanding of the struggles in astronomy and cosmology during the past decades. As the first comprehensive film dealing with major new approaches in non-big bang cosmologies, it reveals several deep-rooted theoretical and observational controversies. This is a fact, well hidden from university students and the general public, which is recounted with candour; and potentially leads to the down-fall of the presiding Big Bang theory.

http://www.universe-film.com/

The Big Bang Never Happened [Link] [PDF]

In 1991, my book, the Big Bang Never Happened (Vintage), presented evidence that the Big Bang theory was contradicted by observations and that another approach, plasma cosmology, which hypothesized a universe without begin or end, far better explained what we know of the cosmos. The book set off a considerable debate. Since then, observations have only further confirmed these conclusions, although the Big Bang remains by far the most widely accepted theory of cosmology. This website provides an update on the evidence and the debate over the Big Bang, including the latest technical review and a reply to a widely- circulated criticism as well as a technical reading list, a report on a recent workshop and links to other relevant sites, including one that described my own work on fusion power, which is closely linked to my work in cosmology.

An Interview with Eric J. Lerner [mp3]

Eric J. Lerner was the special guest for this Space Show program. Mr. Lerner discussed in detail Focus Fusion which is also Dense Plasma Focus (DPF). Not only did we discuss the relevance of this for us all here on Earth, but for space travel and transportation as well. This program is a continuation in our ongoing discussion of fusion and I must say, Mr. Lerner's approach and what he is doing sounds very plausible and exciting. To find out more, visit www.lawrencevilleplasmaphysics.com and also http://www.focusfusion.org/. At the Focus Fusion site, you will find a detailed description of the research, the hydrogen and boron fuel usage, diagrams and more. The plan is to work toward scientific feasibility in about three years, then engineering development in another three years and then in the seventh year t have a working prototype in place for commercial demonstration purposes. I urge listeners to visit the two sites discussed by Mr. Lerner and to listen to this program as it will put an entirely new light on our ongoing fusion discussions, the use of HE3 from the Moon for fusion and the continued development and expenditures for the large Tokomak reactors. You can contact Mr. Lerner with your questions and comments by emailing him at elerner@igc.org. Also, consider joining the Focus Fusion Society explained on his website. I believe this effort deserves not only our attention but our support.

Featured Download - Venezuela Bolivariana: People and Struggle of the Fourth World War

Perhaps the most important leftist documentary of recent times. The Bolivarian revolutionary film collective presents an unparralleled film concerning the revolution, counter-revolution and the basis of the achievement of power by the working class of Venezuela with the aid of the urban poor, the rank and file military, poor farmers, youth, students and the intelligensia.

From the begining of the Bolivarian revolution in 1989 this film traces the development of the proletarian movement to power through the mistakes of proletarian bonapartism through counter-revolution to the beginings of the achievement of power by the working class in Venezuela and all Latin America. As the prelude of the 4th World war - the proletariat, the urban poor and the poor farmer against Capitalism, its imperialism and its globalisation.

A testiment to the power of the working class, this film is not only educational but inspirational.

Frank and raw about the admitted errors and mistakes of the leftists officer coup it presents not only parrallels with the current struggle of the Phillipines and Moslem Mindanao, but points to lessons for us all including the call, as raised by Laban ng Masa, for the Constituent Assembly.

911 In Plane Sight [Avi]

The official story of 9/11 was told on TV by field reporters, rescue workers, and on-the-scene eyewitnesses. However, that footage was shown only once on live television in the first hours of the attacks and then... it was never repeated. The stories changed, information was enigmatically omitted, and what can only be described as officially prescribed propaganda took the place of indisputable reality.

The Boys Of Baraka [XVid]

Though some questions were left unanswered, this film successfully conveyed a vivid depiction of the struggles faced by young black males in the Baltimore area. As a native Detroiter, I made many connections to the issues facing youth there as well: I worked in Detroit public schools teaching dozens of 8th graders who were reading at a second grade level. What the Baltimore youth are facing is occurring all over our country. The underlying theme here is how the public school systems in inner cities have woefully disadvantaged entire GENERATIONS of black boys and girls. The film has great potential for building awareness, if not for those who are able to create educational systemic changes, at least for the youth who just need someone to believe in them for once.

Fahrenheit-9-11 [iso]

One of the most controversial and provocative films of 2004, Fahrenheit 9/11 is Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore's searing examination of the Bush administration's actions in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11. With his characteristic humor and dogged commitment to uncovering the facts, Moore considers the presidency of George W. Bush and where it has led us. He looks at how - and why - Bush and his inner circle avoided pursuing the Saudi connection to 9/11, despite the fact that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis and Saudi money had funded Al Qaeda. Fahrenheit 9/11 shows us a nation kept in constant fear by FBI alerts and lulled into accepting a piece of legislation, the USA Patriot Act, that infringes on basic civil rights. It is in this atmosphere of confusion, suspicion and dread that the Bush Administration makes its headlong rush towards war in Iraq - and Fahrenheit 9/11 takes us inside that war to tell the stories we haven't heard, illustrating the awful human cost to U.S. soldiers and their families.

The Untold Story Of Emmett Louis Till [DivX]

In August 1955, Mamie Till-Mobley of Chicago sent her only child, 14 year-old Emmett Louis Till, to visit relatives in the Mississippi Delta. Little did she know that only 8 days later, Emmett would be abducted from his Great-Uncle’s home, brutally beaten and murdered by one of the oldest Southern taboos: whistling at a white woman in public. The murderers were soon arrested but later acquitted of murder by an all-white, all-male jury. Social filmmaking at its most effective, Keith Beauchamp's documentary The Untold Story Of Emmett Louis Till reconstructs the infamously brutal murder of the eponymous 14-year-old African-American boy, which helped to marshal the American Civil Rights Movement. When the mischievous Till, on a visit to relatives in Mississippi, dared to whistle at a local white woman, it was only a matter of hours before he met with inhuman torture and a watery deathbed at the bottom of the Tallahatchie River. Though authorities tried to shush up the atrocious crime as quickly as possible, hurrying Till's mutilated body into a coffin with the intent of burying it immediately, Till's remarkably strong mother, Mamie Till Mobley, insisted on displaying the hideous face of racism for all the world to see. This horrific image became an iconic symbol of one of the most shameful eras in American history. Emmett’s brutal murder - and his family’s brave actions in the horrifying aftermath- served as a major impetus for America's civil rights movement and led to Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to make decisions that changed the course of history. Told chronologically, the film unravels its narrative thread through eyewitness accounts and archival footage. Delving into the trial and its deplorable outcome--the exoneration of the two admitted killers was shocking in the very fact that it shocked no one at all--Beauchamp opens up a web of unanswered questions about the case. The product of more than a decade of research, Beauchamp's film managed to get the 50-year-old murder case reopened. The Chicago Tribune wrote, "If you don’t believe film can change the world, you haven’t seen The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till."

An Act of State - The Execution of Martin Luther King [XVid]

Forget everything you think you know, Pepper insists. James Earl Ray did not pull the trigger. The journalist-turned-lawyer's previous title, Orders to Kill: The Truth Behind the Murder of Martin Luther King Jr., was more a prelude to this title than the final word. Twenty years after James Earl Ray was convicted, Pepper set out to clear him; in the process, he brought to light reams of evidence that were ignored in the original trial. The key to his case is Loyd Jowers, a bar owner who claims to have disposed of the murder weapon at the request of a local mob figure. Partially on the strength of the Orders to Kill material, Pepper won the support of King's wife and children, who brought Jowers and "unknown co-conspirators" to trial in a civil wrongful death suit in 1999.Dozens of witnesses contributed to a forceful, detailed case that accused the FBI, the CIA, the U.S. military, the Memphis police, and local and national organized crime leaders. After only an hour of deliberation, the jury found for the King family. The accusers, led by Pepper, cried vindication and fully expected to be at the center of one of the biggest news stories of the century. But the trial and the verdict barely registered in the media. Appalled by the silence that followed, Pepper remained determined to bring the details of his exhaustive probe and subsequent civil case to the public, and the result is this exacting book, dense with evidence and analysis of the murder. Pepper sets the tone by recalling the state of civil unrest in this country during the late 1960s and why King's radical activism was such a threat to government and corporate leaders. Simply put, Pepper claims those in power were scared to death of the mass mobilization King's Poor People's Campaign might have inspired. Pepper gradually introduces the vast cast of characters in a dizzying murder conspiracy that winds from a Memphis bar through the shadows of organized crime to the far reaches of national government. He carefully maps each player's place and role in the tangled web and doggedly tries to stick to a straightforward narrative. The number of unanswered questions complicates those efforts, but does not cloud the evidence that Ray was not the shooter. Pepper attempts nothing less than a rewrite of history, and a spurring of further investigation. While his moralizing epilogue on the deterioration of democracy is distracting, it is heartfelt, and honors Pepper's commitment to King's legacy.

Life and Debt [Avi]

Jamaica, land of sea, sand and sun... and a prime example of the complexities of economic globalization on the world's developing countries. With twenty-five years of "help" from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank intended to bring Third World nations such as Jamaica into the fold of free market economies, these restructuring" policies have crippled Jamaica's efforts towards self-reliant development while enriching the lenders. This scathing film is an unapologetic look at the "new world order" from the point of view of Jamaican workers and farmers, as well as government and policy officials. Featuring a dynamic reggae soundtrack and a searing voice over based on text by Jamaica Kincaid, as well as interviews with former Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manly, Deputy Director of the IMF Stanley Fisher and President of Haiti Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Life and Debt portrays the relationship between Jamaican poverty and the practices of the international lending agencies while driving home the devastating consequences of globalization.

The Stalin Memorial Lecture [Avi]

The Stalin Memorial Lecture (BBC4 documentary) 2006.aviJonathan Meades dissects Stalinist architecture as if it were a Russian doll, revealing layers of style and a legacy of monumental buildings. Stalin himself was airbrushed out of Russian history in the late 1950s, but the buildings and icons created by his regime cannot be seen in isolation from the man who ruled the Soviet Union with an iron hand. Alanoz said: "Actually I don't trust a word he says to be true, I just adore his surreal style and the way he constantly finds something new to insult people with and never cares how offensive he's being. He's a kick in the face to documentary making conventions to say the least..."
